Facilitators

Jonee Brigham, AIA, LEED AP O+M, is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute on the Environment, University of Minnesota working in the area of Green Schools and Environmental Education. Based on her background as a licensed architect and artist, she developed an art-led environmental education approach called Earth Systems Journey, which is the basis for the River Journey Case Study that will be included in the training, and was previously applied at the pre-school/kindergarten level, and for second graders. She has been a sustainability consultant, practicing school architect, and a sustainable design researcher, instructor, and author. She has a Bachelor of Architecture degree and an interdisciplinary Master of Liberal Studies degree from the University of Minnesota. Jonee taps the storytelling-potential of infrastructure to explore stories of human-nature interconnections.

Meg Cavalier, Ed.D., is the Executive Director at River's Edge Academy, an environmental charter high school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Before coming to River’s Edge, She was the secondary principal at Bethany Academy in Bloomington, where she also taught Life science, Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics. She has experience as an Interpretive Naturalist at the Minnesota Zoo, Special Education teacher and youth pastor. She is a licensed K-12 Principal and Superintendent and earned a Doctorate in Education Administration from Bethel University. She also chairs the Minnesota Green Schools Coalition Executive Committee. Meg is committed to the environmental and experiential approach of River’s Edge Academy and how it supports student growth and leadership.

Scott Freburg works as a GIS Administrator for MN.IT Services at the Minnesota Department of Education. He is a T3G 2014 alum and the Primary administrator for the ELA contract providing free ArcGIS software to K-12 schools. He is also actively helping schools get started with ArcGIS Online. He has been in the GIS field for over twenty-five years and is currently a member of the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium Board and the State GeoSpatial Advisory Board.

Len Kne, GISP is the Associate Director of U-Spatial at the University of Minnesota and will be the primary investigator by coordinating the workshops. He has collaborated with several K-12 schools to introduce web mapping and spatial thinking by hosting students at the University. Len brings extensive experience with GIS and Information Technologies in higher education, construction, government, and non-profit organizations to his work at U-Spatial, a center at the University of Minnesota providing support for spatial activities. He is an alum of the University of Minnesota with a BS in Recreation Resource Management (2005) and Master of Geographic Information Science (2009). He is on the faculty of the MGIS program and teaches project management, spatial databases, and a variety of graduate seminar classes focusing on the use of technology in GIS. He is looking forward to the day when everyone is thinking spatially.
